Which SUP Is Perfect For You?

Stand-up paddleboarding is for everyone. That’s what's so great about it. You can take a SUP anywhere. It doesn’t matter if it’s the ocean, the lake or the river; you’re still going to have the same experience as the next person. It really is one of the best watersports to be involved with.

However, like every sport, there are different levels of equipment that represent certain standards and comfort out on the water. It just comes down to getting it right, so you can get the most out of your SUP and most importantly, yourself.

Red Paddle Co makes some of the best inflatable stand-up paddleboards on the market and offers a wide range of shapes and sizes to suit every level of confidence.

Their all-rounder board is called the ‘Ride’. The shape is fairly constant throughout the board which allows for great manoeuvrability and a solid glide. Having good manoeuvrability is important as it will allow you to turn the board in whichever direction without any hassle. Additionally, gliding is an important factor to an all-round board, as it allows for the SUP to continue in the same direction without you having to paddle as much – thus conserving energy.

- Beginner level -

If you’re ready to step up from an all-rounder board and attack the surf, you’re going to need a board that’s less than 10 foot and is more dynamic in shape. Red Paddle Co has a board named the ‘Whip’. It has a much narrower tail to the all-rounder which allows for far greater turning power because the water is able to pass much more quickly than a wider tail. There are also inserted batons in the rail that allows for great agility when turning on the wave – similar to how a surfboard is able to manoeuvre itself in the surf.

- Intermediate / experienced level -

If you prefer calmer waters, such as a lake, then Red Paddle Co offer a touring board named the ‘Sport’ that is far taller than their other boards, for the sole purpose of being able to glide for longer distances. The pointy nose and square back allows for less friction in the centre where you’re positioned, thus having the board cut and glide through the water for a solid amount of time.

- Beginner / intermediate level -

If you’re all about the adventure and plan on being out on the water for a long period of time, you’re going to need a big board, and Red Paddle Co offer one named the ‘Voyager.’ The length will generally be around 12-13ft and come equipped with enough space to have luggage. Given the board is so long, you won’t have the same manoeuvrability as the ‘Whip’ but you will have the same gliding power as the ‘Sport’ - if not better.

- Intermediate / experienced level -

Most of the other brands including Naish, Jobe, STX and Fanatic will follow the same shapes and sizes and offer pretty similar stand-up paddleboards. it comes down to what you want to get out of your time on the water.
